WORLD BIOETHICS DAY

World Bioethics Day was celebrated on 19th October 2016 at Father Muller Medical College according to the UNESCO Template.  The program commenced at 2:30 pm with “Evolution and need of World Bioethics Day” by Dr Princy Louis Palatty, Head, South India unit, UNESCO chair, bioethics, Haifa followed by the acceptance speech for the “Most Active Bioethics Member” by Dr Prema D’cunha, HOD, Obstetrics and Gynaecology on the topic “Respect in Maternity Care-Dignity for Women”.             

This was followed by a talk on “Laws and rights” by the Guest of Honor Dr Tharanath, Principal, SDM Law College.  

The inaugural program was held at 3.15 pm which was presided over by Rev. Fr Richard Coelho, Administrator, FMMCH with Dr Jayaprakash Alva, Dean, FMMC delivering the welcome address and initiation into the theme of Human Dignity and Human Rights.  The Symbolic lighting of the lamp signaled the opening of the World Bioethics Day Celebration.

Dr Nagesh KR, General Secretary, South India unit, UNESCO chair, bioethics, Haifa, introduced the Judges for the WBD Celebrations.

The Chief Guest, Dr Ravindranath Shanubogue, Human Rights Activist, Udupi delivered the inaugural address which was followed by Prize distribution for various competitions with felicitation of judges for those events.

In his Presidential address Rev. Fr Richard Coelho Administrator of FMMCH  highlighted the aspects of Human Dignity and its relevance today.

Dr Rekha Boloor, HOD, Department of Microbiology proposed the vote of thanks. 

The Chief Guest Dr Ravindranath Shanubogue delivered the key note address  on Human Rights making it very interesting interspersed with many cases.

The panel discussion, “Preserving Human Rights in Health Care”, was moderated by Dr Smitha Bhat, Professor, Department of Medicine with the Panelists Dr Erel. A.Dias, HOD, Department of General Surgery, Dr Nandakishore, Professor, Department of Dermatology and Dr Raghuveer Adiga, HOD, Orthopaedics.  They deliberated on the Article 8, 12, 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which engaged the audience by the sharing of their personal experiences.

The panelists and the moderator were handed over mementos by the Chief Guest.

The Program concluded with a Street Play on Human Dignity and Human Rights   presented by the College of Nursing.
