Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran – An Inspiring Encounter for Medical postgraduate Students in Mangalore

World
renowned Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arul Kumaran, Professor of OBG from St George’s
University, London was the guest speaker for the CME EVOLVE (Inspired
learning, beyond excellence) at Father
Muller Medical College held on 22nd January 2017.
The CME
was organsied by the department of OBG, FMMCH headed by Dr Prema D’Cunha, with
Dr Joylene D’Almeida as the organizing secretary. Professor Sir
Arulkumaran is the past president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
and the International Federation of Gynaecologists. Of the many accolades to
his credit, the one that the Professor is most proud of - being honoured as Knight
Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in June 2009 for his services to
medicine.
He is a
legend who is the primary author of many academic texts that are used for
post graduate teaching like "The management of labour†.
The
session began at 5 pm which included lectures by the great Professor on CTG ,
Obstetric Sepsis and Quality indicators. There was also a “meet the expert session
where obstetric post graduates interacted with the professor.
A man of
great stature, professor Arulkumaran exuded only grace and humility. He advised
the medical postgraduates on the three keys to success: love for your parents,
love for teachers and doing one good deed a day.
The
obstetric and gynaecology departments of all the medical colleges in Mangalore,
were deeply inspired by his stimulating session of post graduate teaching and
an active audience interaction was present.
The session was deeply appreciated by all, including
doctors and postgraduates from Manipal, and was followed by a dinner banquet.
