Support for the flood victims
Keeping in view the intensity and the magnitude of the floods in Kerala meeting was convened on 16th of August 2018 by Rev. Fr Vincent Saldanha, Administrator, Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, for supporting the victims of floods and natural calamities in Kerala. After the thorough deliberations, necessary measures were taken to go forward for the collection of money and kind (food, grains and clothing). The nearest districts Wayanad and Calicut were chosen as the target of our mission. An action team was formed under the leadership of Rev. Fr Sylvester Vincent Lobo which consisted of staff, postgraduates, interns and students. Support requests for the cause were conveyed through all means of communication including social media. Within 46 hours of the planning the relief materials including gents wear, ladies wear, kids wear, sanitary napkins, baby diapers, rice sacks, pulses, biscuits, milk powders, mineral water, blankets, mats etc were collected. The students of Father Muller Homeopathic Medical College took a meal fast, and the proceeds of which were donated to this noble cause. Apart from that, they went to nearby shops and towns and collected whatever possible. Within a span of a few hours, everything was set for distribution. The total donation raised for this purpose was more than Rupees six lakhs. Thanks to all the staff, students & well-wishers, people of goodwill for their generous contribution to this cause.
The team consisting of Dr Sebastian, Dr Vivek Sakthidharan, Dr Sooraj K.V and Dr Manu Manjith were chosen to take up the task of distributing the materials directly to the co-ordinators in Wayanad. After a prayer lead by Rev Fr Vincent Saldanha, the team started for the mission on August 18th 2018, Saturday, at 5.00 pm. Two truckloads full of relief materials also contained generous contributions from Rotaract Club-NITK Surathkal, NITTE- Deralakatte and Kasaragod Association Kuwait. The team reached their destination by around 4.30 a.m., Sunday.
The collection was distributed at following points through the Tahsildar at Mananthavady
· Daya Pain and Palliative Care Centre, Pinangodu.
· St. Sebastian Church, Cherukatoor
· Jeeva Jyothi Charitable Trust, Mananthavady, Thudi Tribal Unity for Development Initiative, Panamaram and Backpackers Tourism society, Wayanad.
· The Scouts and Guides were the next recipients, receiving 500 litres of water.
The team met the Tahsildar, at Mananthavady, who expressed his thanks for extending the helping hands. The Tahsildar narrated the pathetic scenario prevailing in Wayanad and the needs the suffering population have. A large population have lost their houses due to landslides and also their cattle stock, which are the main source of their livelihood. The team visited relief camps filled with thousands of people, who are depressed and in agony. As the rain stops and climate becomes favourable, the people are expecting the new threat, the spread of viral diseases and epidemics. With a heavy heart, the team started the return journey at 10.30 pm night and returned back to Deralakatte campus at 4.30 am, Monday.
It is not the end of a mission; it is just the beginning of a bigger mission.
