CME ON MEDICO LEGAL ASPECTS IN HEALTHCARE

Healthcare is experiencing new waves of opportunities where providers are re-inventing existing delivery models to bring healthcare in proximity to the general public. As budding healthcare Administrators, there are a lot of legal challenges to be confronted in the near future. In view of these upcoming challenges, the department of hospital administration of Father Muller Medical College organized a one day Workshop on MEDICO LEGAL ASPECTS IN HEALTHCARE.  

The Workshop was inaugurated at 9.30 am by the Chief Guest, Dr Ghulam Jeelani Qadri, Principal, Yenepoya Medical College and President, A.H.A Mangalore-Manipal Chapter.  

The  session started  by invoking God’s blessings followed by  cordial welcoming of the gathering by Ms Sweta D’Cunha, Professor and Head, Department of Hospital Administration.

The Chief Guest, in his Inaugural address, briefed on the various aspects that contribute to medical negligence and also gave a list of laws applicable to medical negligence.  He even spoke of the responsibilities of the hospitals and hospital administrators towards medico legal cases.

SESSION 1

Advocate Mr Udayananda, District Government Pleader, D.K and Special Public Prosecutor Department of Customs and Revenue Intelligence, Government of India, conducted the session on NEGLIGENCE BY MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AND ITS LEGAL PERSPECTIVE. The speaker gave an insight on negligence in Medical Practice. He also explained the various consequences of negligence and the reasons that contributed implied undertaking as a part of Medical Practice. The speaker concluded by enriching the participants, stressing upon reasonable care and need of the hour care.

SESSION 2

Dr Uday Kumar K, Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology and Medical Superintendent, Father Muller Medical College Hospital conducted the session on MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE - DOCTORS AND ADMINISTRATIVE PERSPECTIVE. The speaker gave a picture on few cases that led to medical negligence. He briefed upon the components that the administrators must keep in mind when dealing with medico legal cases which include Identification, Communication, and Medication Error, Laboratory results, Surgeries, Safe surgery checklist, Misadventures and complications. He concluded with the take home message that what is not documented is not done and proper documentation would serve as a guard during the medico legal cases.
