CME ON PEDIATRIC CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

The Department of Biochemistry of FMMC organized a one day CME on “Pediatric Clinical Biochemistry” on 16th September 2017 in the Hospital Conference Hall.

The programme started with a prayer song. The Dean of FMMC  Dr Jayaprakash Alva, welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by  Dr  Poornima Manjrekar, Head of Biochemistry at KMC Mangalore and the National  President of Association of Clinical Biochemists of India. The Chief Guest was introduced by Dr Malathi M., HOD of Biochemistry and organizing chairperson of the CME.

Dr Poornima, in her address, stressed the need for pediatric reference intervals for the biochemical parameters, developing the speciality of Pediatric Clinical Biochemistry and minimizing  errors in sample collection.  Rev.Fr  Richard Coelho, Director of FMCI presided over the inaugural programme. He highlighted the importance of lab tests in the diagnosis of pediatric diseases and the impact of child’s health on the parents and family. The initiative taken by the Department of Biochemistry was appreciated by the Director, chief guest and the Dean in their messages. Rev.Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa , Administrator of FMMCH and Rev.Fr Ajith Menezes, Administrator of FMMC were present on the dais. Dr Avinash SS, Organizing Secretary of the CME, proposed the vote of thanks. The masters of the programme were Dr  Maitreyee DS and Dr Shailaja Katti.

The delegates witnessed an informative and interesting presentations from experts. Dr Vadaradaj Shenoy, Professor of  Pediatrics, FMMC spoke on “Importance of clinical biochemistry in the diagnosis of pediatric diseases and  challenges faced in the interpretation of lab reports”.  Dr  Vijay Bhat, Biochemist from Manipal Hospital Bangalore addressed the issues of preanalytical variables and pediatric reference intervals. Dr Saritha Paul, Neonatologist of FMMCH delivered the talk on “ Role of biochemical tests in pre natal and neonatal care”.  There was a session on “techniques of sample collection from neonates and children” by Ms. Megha from BD pre analytical systems. Importance of biochemical tests in pediatric cancers was explained by Dr Harsha Prasad L., pediatric oncologist from KMC Mangalore.   Dr Shrikrishna Acharya, Endocrinologist of KSHEMA spoke on “Childhood obesity and metabolic syndrome”.

The CME was attended by about 120 delegates from faculties of Biochemistry, Paediatrics and lab medicine from various parts of the State.  The CME was well appreciated by the delegates.
