UROLITHIASIS
Formation of stones in the urinary tract is
called Urolithiasis. Stones can form in kidneys, ureter and bladder. Stones are
formed from the constituents in the urine.
When the concentration of some solutes
exceeds the body’s capacity to dissolve in urine, they become insoluble,
aggregate and form stones. Stones in urinary tract are composed of calcium,
oxalate, phosphate, uric acid, ammonium and rarely cystine.
SIGNS AND
SYMPTOMS
Patients can have mild symptoms to severe
symptoms.
Dull aching pain in flank, lower abdomen,
pain radiating to front of thighs, inner thighs, scrotum, tip of penis, severe
pain can cause nausea and vomiting. Urinary problems like dysuria, burning
micturition, and hematuria can be present. Fever with chills and rigors
indicate underlying tract infection.
Sometimes stones can be asymptomatic and
detected incidentally when investigating for other medical conditions.
