Overview

The department of pathology started in the year 1999 as an infant department and is now bloomed to a well equipped department with highly qualified faculty. There are around 14 teaching staff who are approachable and enthusiastic in teaching and are also actively involved in all the academic activities. One hundred and fifty students are admitted each year to the MBBS course. The department conducts theory and practical classes in a structured manner with students being informed about the schedule well in advance. The student performance is monitored by conducting revision classes, class test, tutorials, sessional examinations and model exam before the university examination. The department also conducts regular student’s feedback which provides adequate inputs to design the curriculum regularly.

The department admits eight post graduates every year. The faculty train these post graduates in an excellent manner including recent awareness in pathology. They have several academic sessions every day such as gross seminars, microscopy seminars, gross test, slide test, slide discussions, journal clubs, topic seminars and interdepartmental discussions. Their thesis progress and theory knowledge is also monitored periodically. They have complete exposure to perform all the different investigations carried out in the various sections of pathology laboratory. The department has maintained 100% results in post graduate examination with a few students getting ranks in the university examination. Faculty and the post graduates participate and present posters and oral papers in various local, state, national and international conferences. The senior faculty participate as resource person in some of the CMEs and conferences. The department conducts CMEs and conferences regularly. The library has over 303 books. The department has over 100 publications in various national and international indexed journals. Rare and classical specimens that are received in the department have been archived with system wise categorization in the museum of the department.

The pathology laboratory has various sections such as histopathology, hematology, clinical pathology, cytopathology, frozen section and immunohistochemistry. The blood bank and immunohematology is well equipped and serves all round the clock. The histopathology section receives around 11,668 specimens per annum. Various panels of IHC markers are done. The cytology section receives around 4,212 sample per annum which includes Fine needle aspiration cytology, fluid cytology and Exfoliative cytology. The Hematology section receives 4,63,458 sample per annum. The hematology and clinical pathology also offer 24 hour service. The blood bank issues around 15,229 blood bags per annum. It caters primarily to Father Muller Medical College Hospital and secondarily to all the hospitals around the adjacent localities and states. The central laboratory is NABL accredited and the Blood Bank is NABH accredited. The Father Muller Medical College is NAAC ‘A’ grade accredited.
