YOUTH RED-CROSS UNIT

Introduction:

Youth Red Cross Unit (YRCU) of Father Muller Medical College was constituted in the year 2012 and is headed by the Dean of FMMC, Dr Jayaprakash Alva.
Dr Kirana Pailoor is the Staff convenor and Programme officer of FMMC’s YRCU.
Dr. Reena Alva was a Faculty member, with all the undergraduates of FMMC as student members of YRCU, FMMC.
Dr Maitreyee D S, took over as faculty member of YRCU,FMMC in 2016 from Dr Reena Alva.
Every year in collaboration with blood bank, FMMCH, the YRCU have been conducting several competitions and felicitating regular blood donors on occasions like World Blood Donor Day and National Blood Donor Day.

VISION

To develop sustainable approaches in addressing key areas of disaster and health amongst youth.

MISSION

Informing youth members the roles and responsibilities of the Red Cross and encouraging them to contribute simultaneously creating an awareness for care of their own health and that of others.

AIMS

  • The Indian Youth Red Cross Society is a part of the Indian Red Cross Society (students in college or age between 18-30 years are called Youth Red Cross).
  • The Youth Red Cross is a group movement, organized with the college and the lecturer is the recognized leader and called Programme officer of the group.

OBJECTIVES

YRCU is organized for the purpose of inculcating the ideals and practices of service especially in relation to
  • Taking care of their own health and that of others.
  • Understanding and accepting civic responsibility.
  • Maintaining a spirit of friendliness and helpfulness towards other youths in India and all over the world.

Events

The Department of Immuno-Hematology and Blood Transfusion (IHBT) in association with the Red Cross FMMC unit, organized a successful blood donation camp at the Muller Mini Hall, Convention Centre. The event, inaugurated at 10 am, witnessed a heartwarming response from students and faculty alike.

The event was compered by Ms. Joanna John and Mr. Blessin Baiju II MBBS students. Dr Kirana Pailoor Prof. and Head IHBT, delivered the welcome speech, expressing gratitude for the enthusiastic participation of the students.

Dr. Nishanth Krishna K. Assoc. Prof. Community Medicine and Head of the Youth Red Cross unit at FMMC, delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of everyone involved in organizing the camp.

The event was presided over by Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho Director FMCI, along with Rev. Fr Jeevan George Sequeira, Administrator, FMMCH, Rev. Fr Nelson Dheeraj Pais, Assistant Administrator, FMMCH, Dr. Antony Sylvan DSouza, Dean, FMMC, and Dr. Hilda Fernandes, Principal, FMCOAHS.

Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director FMCI, in his address, highlighted the community's response to the blood shortage. He commended the students for their selfless act of donating blood, especially during Lent and Ramadan, when the blood bank often faces shortages. Director, FMCI emphasized that donating blood is not just a donation but a lifeline for those in need. He also highlighted the Thalassemia Centre at FMCI, which requires approximately 200 units of blood each month to treat over 150 families free of cost. He stressed that donating blood is an act of kindness and concern towards our neighbors, likening it to the selfless act of Jesus Christ shedding his blood for humanity.

The event not only contributed to replenishing the blood bank but also served as a platform to instill a sense of social responsibility and altruism among the students. The overwhelming response to the blood donation camp reflects the spirit of compassion and unity at Muller Dine.

On the occasion of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, the Blood Centre, FMMCH in association with the Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC organised a Voluntary Blood donation camp on 13th October, 2023 at the Blood Centre, FMMCH. A few of the students and staff of FMCI, had come to donate blood voluntarily.

Around 17 of them were eligible and donated blood. Certificates were given to all the donors. We thank all the donors for their noble gesture.

Activities

Be a regular blood donor and be someone’s lifeline. To commemorate the same “World Blood Donor Day” is celebrated on 14th June. “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often” is the theme for the year 2023. On this occasion, the Blood Center, FMMCH and Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC organized a program in order to honor and felicitate the blood donors and the organizers on 16th June 2023 from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm in the Audio Visual Hall where blood donors ,camp organizers and all the management committee members from the medical college and hospital , HODs and chief of units of various departments were present testifying this memorable event.

The welcome speech was delivered by Dr Kirana Pailoor, Professor and Head, Department of IHBT and Convener, YRCU. The program was duly continued by lighting up the lamp to ensure a warm beginning to the program. Dr Pallavi, faculty member of YRCU, introduced the Chief Guest for the day. Rev Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, the Director, Father Muller Charitable Institutions, felicitated the Chief Guest and honored him. Dr Nishanth Krishna, faculty member of YRCU introduced the Guest of Honor for the day to the gathering. Rev Fr Ajith B Menezes, Administrator, Father Muller Medical College felicitated him.

Rev Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, the Director, Father Muller Charitable Institution felicitated the organizers who stood as a backbone to all the programs which were organized. Dr Kishore Kumar M, the District Health and Family Welfare Officer, Dakshina Kannada who was the Chief Guest for the day felicitated the Bombay Blood Group blood donors. Rev Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, Administrator, Father Muller Medical College Hospital who was the Guest of honor for the day felicitated the volunteers from the general public who volunteered to donate blood.Rev. Fr Ajith B Menezes, Administrator, Father Muller Medical College felicitated the students of FMCI. Rev Fr Nelson Dheeraj Pais, Assistant Administrator, Father Muller Medical College Hospital and Dr Antony Sylvan D’Souza, Dean , Father Muller Medical College, felicitated the staff of FMCI who were voluntary blood donors. After the felicitation ,the Chief Guest for the day, Dr Kishore Kumar M, the District Health and Family Welfare Officer addressed the gathering and mentioned the importance of donating blood and educated the gathering regarding the same. Rev Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, the Director , FMCI delivered the Presidential address.

Dr Charu Khosla, Assistant professor, Department of IHBT delivered the vote of thanks. The event was concluded by Institutional Anthem. Post the event, refreshments were arranged to all the invitees.

To commemorate “World Red Cross Day” on 8th May 2023, the Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC organized a talk by Dr. Supriya Hegde Aroor , Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry on the topic “ Positive Mental Health ” on 16th May 2023 from 03:30 pm to 04:30 pm in the Decennial Memorial Hall for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year MBBS students & 3rd and 4th year BPT students.

The welcome speech was given by Dr Kirana Pailoor, Professor and Head, Department of IHBT, Convener, YRCU. The badges were handed over to the Convener, YRCU, Dr.Kirana Pailoor and to the Faculty Members, YRCU, Dr. Maitreyee D S, Dr Pallavi and Dr Nishanth Krishna K by Rev. Fr. Ajith Menezes , Administrator, FMMC. The student committee members- Mr H N Nirmanyu, President, YRCU, Mr Surya S, Secretary, YRCU, Mr Tejas S, Joint secretary, YRCU, Ms Neaha , Treasurer ,YRCU and Ms Delicia, Joint treasurer, YRCU were handed over the badges by Dr. Antony Sylvan D’Souza, Dean, FMMC. This was followed by the oath taking ceremony.

The presidential address was delivered by Rev.Fr. Ajith Menezes, following which the resource person Dr. Supriya Hegde Aroor was introduced by Dr. Pallavi, Faculty member, YRCU. An engaging session ensued with the talk by the resource person, who was felicitated by Dr Kirana Pailoor. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Nishanth Krishna K, faculty member, YRCU.The program was compèred by Mr H N Nirmanyu, President, YRCU and Mr Tejas S, Joint Secretary, YRCU.

On the occasion of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day ,Youth Red Cross Unit ,FMMC in association with Blood Centre, FMMCH organised an Essay Competition on 1st October 2022.The topic for the competition was
“ Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives.”

The other dignitaries present for the occasion were Rev. Fr. Nelson Dheeraj Pais, Assistant Administrator, FMMCH , Rev. Fr. George Jeevan Sequeria , Assistant Administrator, FMMCH, Rev. Fr. Shetty, Deputy Medical Superintendent, FMMCH.

Dr. Nicole Rosita Pereira ,the essay competition event judge was felicitated by the Director of FMCI.The first prize was awarded to Chaithanya .K.S. from 4th MBBS, Batch 2018. The second prize was awarded to Maria Rebello from 2nd MBBS, Batch 2020 and the third prize was handed over to Maryam Azra Misbah from 3rd MBBS, Batch 2019.

The Dignitaries were welcomed and thanked by Dr. Kirana Pailoor, Professor and Head - Blood Centre and Convener, YRCU. Dr. Maithreyee (Organising Secretary), Faculty member, YRCU, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Dr. Charu Khosla , Blood Centre Officer were also present. The program was compèred by Mr H N Nirmanyu, Student President, YRCU, 3rd MBBS Student, FMMC.

On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, the Blood Bank staff (Dept of IHBT) in association with Youth Red Cross Unit,FMMC organised a Voluntary Blood donation camp on 14th June 2022 at Silver Jubilee Hall,with the theme "Donating blood is an act of solidarity.Join the effort and save lives." The Asst.Administrators of FMMCH,a few of the students and staff of FMCI,had come to donate blood voluntarily. Around 66 of them were eligible to donate the blood, among which 33 of them donated in the camp and the rest 33 donated in the Blood Bank,FMMCH. Certificates were given to all the donors.

The Orientation Programme for I MBBS students was held on 24.02.2022 in the Lecture Hall 1 of Father Muller Medical College. Dr Kirana Pailoor, Convener, YRCU gave a talk on the topic "Orientation to Blood bank and Youth Red Cross Unit".

To commemorate “World Red Cross Day” on 8th May 2022, the Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC organized a talk by Dr. Sudhir Prabhu H, Professor of Community Medicine on the topic “Disaster Vulnerability India-Mitigation & Preparedness” on 5th May 2022 from 03:30 pm to 04:30 pm in the Decennial Memorial Hall for 3rd and 4th year of MBBS & BPT students and 2nd & 3rd year of B.Sc. MLT students.

On the occasion of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, Blood bank FMMCH in association with Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC organized a Voluntary Blood Donation Camp on 1st October 2021 at Silver Jubilee Hall.

The Blood Bank staff had come to volunteer for the blood donation camp along with 2 student volunteers.Students of FMCI had come to donate blood voluntarily. Around 19 of them were eligible to donate. E-certificates were given to all the donors.

To commemorate “World Red Cross Day” the FMMCH Blood Bank in Association with Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC had organized an online Essay Writing Competition for students on 8th May 2021 on the theme “Safe Blood Saves Lives” Despite the pandemic, there was a very good response by our students, who participated in large numbers.

To commemorate World Blood Donor Day, the FMMCH Blood Bank in association with Youth Red cross Unit , FMMC, organized an Online Drawing Competition on 14th June 2021 on the theme “Give Blood and Keep the World Beating”

A poster competition was held by Blood Bank, FMMCH and Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC on 1st October 2019 to commemorate National Voluntary Blood Donation Day. It was held as a part of ‘Inferno’ , Cultural Fest

In commemoration of the “World Blood Donor day” celebrated world over on the 14th of June, the Father Muller Medical College Blood Bank in association with the Youth Red Cross Unit, Father Muller Medical College and Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK) celebrated “World Blood Donors’ Day” on 20th June 2019 at the Hospital Conference Hall.

A poster competition was held on 19th June 2019 on the theme, “Safe blood for all” in the Silver Jubilee Hall, FMMC for the undergraduate students on the occasion of World Blood Donor’s Day by Blood Bank and Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC.

A short movie making competition on the theme “Be there for someone else. Give Blood. Share life.” was organised on the occasion of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day 2018 as a part of one of the event in the Cultural Fest “Arena” held in October 2018.

Father Muller Medical College Hospital Blood Bank and Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC organised “World Blood Donor Day” 2018 with the theme “Be there for someone else. Give Blood. Share life.” Mr Ramanath Kunte, Assistant Drugs Controller, Mangalore Circle, Zone-1, was the Chief Guest for the programme. 10 Voluntary Blood Donors were felicitated. Prizes were distributed to winners of Seminar Competition.

An Intercollegiate Seminar Competition was held on 15.06.2018 on the theme “Be there for someone else. Give Blood. Share life,” in the Silver Jubilee Hall, FMMC for the undergraduate students on the occasion of World Blood Donor’s Day by Blood Bank and Youth Red Cross Unit, FMMC.

A blood donation camp was held in association with the blood bank and Youth Red Cross Unit, at Father Muller Homeopathic Medical College Derlakatte, with the theme “Give blood save lives”.

Father Muller Medical College in association with Indian Society of Transfusion Medicine, organised a National CME on Transfusion Medicine, “TRANSCME 2017” with the theme, “Evidence based Transfusion Medicine” on 02.12.2017. Dr R.N Makroo, President, Indian Society of Transfusion Medicine, Director and Senior Consultant, Department of Transfusion Medicine, Molecular Biology & Transplant immunology, Apollo Hospital, New Delhi was the Chief Guest for the programme.

The Poster Competition was held on 11th July 2017 on the theme “Don’t wait till the disaster strikes. Give blood. Give now. Give often.” for the undergraduate students of Father Muller Medical College on the occasion of World Blood Donor’s Day by Blood Bank and Youth Red Cross Unit, Father Muller Medical College.

A Voluntary Blood Donation Camp was held on 28.01.2017 at St Agnes College Mangalore in association with Father Muller Medical College Hospital Blood Bank and Youth Red Cross unit, Father Muller Medical College. A total of 71 units were collected. IIIrd Year BSc MLT students who are members of Youth Red Cross Units performed a skit on the Importance of Voluntary Blood Donation.

Organised World Blood donor’s Day 2017 with the theme“Give Blood. Give now. Give often’’ Honorable Professor Dr Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte University was the Chief Guest for the function.

Inauguration of Youth Red Cross Unit, Father Muller Medical College 2017-18 was also held.

Organised World Blood donor’s Day 2016 with the theme: “Blood connects us all” Mr.K.V Nagaraj Deputy Drugs Controller of Mangalore was the chief guest of the programme.

Organised World Blood donor’s Day 2015 with the theme: “Thank you for saving my life”. Fr. Vinod Mascarenhas, Director Capuchin Krishika Seva Kendra Dayalbagh ,Rural Development Programme ,Belthangady also a regular blood donor was the chief guest of the programme.

A blood donation camp was held in the Silver jubilee hall of FMMC on occasion of World Blood Donor Day, with the Theme:”Safe blood for saving mother”.

Mr. Mario Saldanha who has donated blood more than 120 times was the chief guest of the programme.

To commemorate World Red Cross Day on 8th may 2013, the Red Cross Association of FMMC organized a poster competition for MBBS,BPT,AHS students and Interns on the topic “Disaster Management”.

YRCU, FMMC organized poster competition on the theme “Every Blood Donor Is A Hero”. Groups of students from MBBS, BPT, AHS ,Nursing actively participated. Prizes were awarded for the winners.

To celebrate World Red Cross Day on May 8th a talk was organized by YRCU,FMMC on the topic “First Aid”. The talk was given by Dr.Smitha Bhat, Professor, Department of Medicine. The beneficiaries of this programme were around 300 students from the various colleges of Father Muller Charitable Institutions.
