A REVIEW OF BASIC LIFE SUPPORT COURSE FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION FOR INTERNS 2020-2012 BATCH

A course on Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association was organized for the Interns of Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College from 15th to 18th September 2020 at Father Muller Medical College  ITC.

The objective of the course was to equip the participants with basic life support skills and potentiality to improve victim's chance of survival.

A team of medical professionals lead by Dr Lulu Shereif from the faculty of Father Muller Medical College were the instructors.

Each session started with a prayer followed by an overview of the course by Dr Lulu Sheriff coordinator BLS-ITC, Department of Anesthesiology.

The first session was by Dr Sridhar K A, Department of Paediatrics instructed on the chain of survival with help of video presentation on same by AHA. A practice session was conducted on critical concepts of high quality CPR on mannequins, delivering appropriate ventilation and providing early Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to the victims.

This was followed by an elaborative session on team dynamics by Dr Archana Bhat and Dr Nicole from Department of General Medicine, focused on importance of a qualitative team dynamics for immediate effective care of a victim with a help of a video.

Dr Prashanth briefed on child/Infant BLS. Dr Shailja and Dr Rashmi spoke on various aspects of Paediatric CPR and advanced Ventillation.

This was followed by a practice session in which the batch was divided in five small groups. Each group had an instructor to guide in perceiving the essential skills on mannequins.

Dr Anandkrishna emphasized on key differences between adult and infant BLS, following which there was a brief session on surviving a patient who is choking and opiod poisoning.

Afternoon session went on with testing the skills learnt by the interns, which included MCQ based questionnaire followed by practical demonstration of acquired skills.

A total of 86 interns actively participated in this BLS certificate oriented course.
