Research Training Programme
Research Forum of Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College hosted a
training programme on the topic "Estimating
noises in Human Pathogenetic Trials (HPT) using Jaccard's similarity index and
noise index" on 05.02.2022 for the
faculty members and PG scholars of FMHMC from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Dr Krian P. J, Associate Professor,
Department of Repertory & Co-ordinator of the Research and Scientific
committee was the resource person.
The session was based on an article
publication done by Dr Kurian in the journal 'Homeopathy' in December 2021, on
a method to identify and calculate the degree of noise/symptoms due to various
confounding factors that might creep into the symptoms collected during an HPT.
Dr Vivek Sakthidharan, Co-ordinator of Research
forum, welcomed the gathering and introduced the topic and the resource person.
During the session, Dr Kurian explained the utility of the abovementioned tools
and the need of using it. He started with the examples of various articles
published mentioning flaws in Hahnemannian provings and its effects in the
Materia medica. After introducing his tool, the speaker demonstrated live with
examples the method of calculating the noise that might be present in the
symptoms collected and method to calculate how similar are the symptoms
presented by the drug with that of the placebo group. He finally suggested that
during every HPT adequate measure needs to be taken to keep the similarity index
and noise index as low as possible. The audience ware given opportunity to
interact with the speaker for their queries. He also mentioned the background
for thinking such a concept and also the efforts and perseverance put in
reviewing and getting his article published.
Finally, Dr Vivek concluded the session
and the participants were asked to fill the feedback form for the issue of
e-certificates.
Overall, it was a new and wonderful experience
for the participants, to hear directly from the author of an article in such a
reputed journal and to know of a new concept to be used in the system of
Homoeopathy.
