PSYCME 2024 - CME by Department of Psychiatry

The department of Psychiatry organized PSYCME 2024 - a CME on identifying and managing mental illnesses in general practice in view of observing National Mental Health Awareness Day, with the aim of enhancing the knowledge and skills of interns and post-graduates on 13.08.2024. 

National Mental Health Awareness Day is observed annually on August 6th, this day aims to raise awareness about mental health issues and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. 

Dr Rahul Rao, MBBS, MD, DNB(Psychiatry), PGDMLE, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Father Muller Medical College, Kankanady, the resource person for the day. 

The session began with a prayer song was led by the residents of Psychiatry department, followed by the welcome address and introduction of the resource person from Dr Girish Navada U.K. to the gathering. 

The session was formally inaugurated by lighting the lamp by the panel of esteemed dignitaries, including Resource person, Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, Designate Director, Father Muller Charitable Institutions and Administrator, Rev. Fr Nelson Dheeraj Pais, Administrator, Father Homoeopathic Pharmaceutical Division; Fr Ashwin Crasta, Assistant Administrator, Dr ESJ Prabhu Kiran, Principal, Dr Girish Navada U.K., HOD, Department of Psychiatry and Dr Justina Steefan,  Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry. 

On this occasion the official Instagram Page of the Department of Psychiatry was launched by Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo. This marked a significant milestone in leveraging social media to promote mental health awareness and treatment through Homoeopathy, further expanding the reach and impact of the institution's mental health initiatives. After this the Administrator delivered his message and felicitated the Resource Person, Dr Rahul Rao, in recognition of his expertise and contributions to the field of psychiatry. Dr Justina M Steefan expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, Resource person and the delegates through a vote of thanks. The inaugural program was concluded by 03:00pm with the institution anthem. 

Dr Rahul Rao delivered an insightful lecture on the topic, covering key aspects such as:

1. Evolution of mental health and practices followed through time, Identifying mental illness in general practice: Dr Rao discussed the importance of recognizing early signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and psychosis.2. Treatment approaches: He elaborated on various treatment modalities, including pharmacological interventions, psychotherapy, and lifestyle modifications.3. Challenges faced: Dr Rao highlighted the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in managing mental illnesses, including stigma, limited resources, and patient non-adherence. 

The lecture was followed by an interactive session, where participants engaged in a Q&A discussion, sharing their experiences and seeking clarifications on various aspects of mental health management. 

The PSYCME CME program was a resounding success, providing a valuable learning experience for interns and post-graduates. 

The program was skilfully moderated by Dr Limsa Selsha Happuch, who ensured a smooth flow of events.
