REPORT OF THE NATIONAL SEMINAR

A two days national seminar on “Current trends in issues related to speech and hearing disability” was organized by the College of Speech and Hearing on 30th and 31st August 2017. The formal inauguration was held on 30th August 2017  at 10.00am.  Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director, FMCI presided over the program. Prof. Akhilesh P.M. welcomed the dignitaries as well as the delegates. The Chief Guest for the seminar was Prof. A.M. Khan, Registrar (Evaluation), Mangalore University, who addressed the gathering based on the use of current technology in diagnosis and treatment of persons with speech and hearing problems, ways to reach out to people with lower economic status and spreading awareness on problems related to communication issues.

 

The Guest of Honor Prof. A.K. Sinha, highlighted the use of technology like high technology enabled  hearing aids, advanced technology based early identification system and tele audiometry and tele speech therapy services already existing in Mysuru and Mumbai. He also emphasized the use and accessibility of cochlear implantation which is a boon to children born deaf and enables them to use speech and language as a mode of communication.

 

The President of the function Rev. Fr Richard A. Coelho emphasized on the need of compassion and empathy in taking care of and rehabilitating these differently abled individuals.  He also expressed that these differently abled are gifted by God in certain faculties in which they excel.  He said that for students of Speech and Hearing a lot of opportunities are available to take it as a mission in their life.

 

The Organizing Secretary Sr Cynthia thanked the dignitaries and the entire gathering for their presence and cooperation.

 

Sessions on estimation of disability, ADIP scheme and Overview of ICF in the field of speech and hearing were held throughout the day.

 

The second day commenced with the first session on disability act by Dr. Rajasudhakar.  It was followed by a brief inauguration of the joint program organized by Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing and CBHI “WHO-International classification of functioning, Disability and Health”.  

 

A formal valedictory program was held at the end of session at 4.30pm. Delegates expressed their appreciation and gratitude for conducting such a valuable and innovative seminar. Prof. Akhilesh P.M. the Organizing Chairman concluded the program by thanking the delegates and wising them all well.
